Is eastern and souther Ukraine really pro-Russian?

Putin claims that Russia should protect traditionally Russian speaking population in eastern and southern Ukraine. But do those people want the protection? Here's a photo from today's demonstration in Odessa, the third biggest Ukrainian city, which is almost 100% Russian-speaking.
